Jawbreaker - “Oyster” from Dear You
Ok, now you can call me a “hipster”. But, know that I FOUND these in MY OLD STUFF. This is actually my old cassette player and a couple of cassettes that I found with it. Now, I need to hunt down all my old Mix-tapes. The cassette labeled “Our Shit” apparently used to have MSC recordings on it. But, now has: Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil, Five Iron Frenzy, Less than Jake, the Lawrence Arms, the Broadways, and… I don’t even know what else.
Jawbreaker - “Kiss the Bottle”
I posted Brendan Kelly’s rendition of this the other day. This is Jawbreaker’s version off of “Etc.” I LOVE this song.
Brendan Kelly (of Slapstick, the Broadways, the Falcon, and the Lawrence Arms) performing Jawbreaker’s “Kiss the Bottle.”
This is a pretty good rendition of Jawbreaker’s original.
It gets lonliest at night
Down at the liquor store
Beneath the neon sky
Our moonlight
Six a.m. the floor comes alive with lice
The pan's dried up so tight
With hardened beans
We're hungry
So I lean on you sometimes
Just to see you're still there
Your feet can't take the weight of one
Much less two
We hit concrete
How were we born into this mess?
I know I painted you a prettier picture, baby
But we were run out on a rail
Fell from the wagon to the night train
I kissed the bottle
I should've been kissing you
You wake up to an empty night
With tears for two
Cigarettes they fill the gaps
In our empty days
In our broken teeth
We're jonesing
Say mister, can you spare a dime?
Some change could make a change
Could buy some time
Some freedom
Or an ear to hear my story
It's all I've got
My fiction beats the hell out of my truth
A palm upturned burnt blue
Don't call it sunburn
You've been shaking on the job
Joust one drink ahead of your past
There's a white light coming up
You draw the blinds hoping it'll pass
I kissed the bottle...
Jawbreaker - “Fireman”
If I were to make you a mixtape. This song would be on it. It’s hard to believe that these nerdy looking guys are punk legends but that’s the only way to describe Jawbreaker. You don’t have to have a mohawk to be punk.

Dreamed I was a fireman.
I just smoked and watched you burn.
Dreamed I was an astronaut.
I shot you down like a juggernaut.
Dreamed we were still going out.
Had that one a few times now.
Woke up to find we were not.
It’s good to be awake.
Dreamed I was a tidal wave.
I ravaged your coast,
There were no survivors.
Dreamed I was your landlord.
I showed you place when you had lovers.
If I was a vampire,
I wouldn’t suck your blood.
Then I dreamed I was you.
Sweetest dream I have had.
If you could hear the dreams I’ve had, my dear,
They would give you nightmares for a week.
But you’re not here and I can never sleep.
Come home so I can be a creep.
Dreamed I was a dream.
I stole you away in your sleep.
Saved you from a fire,
A gun for hire,
I introduced you to a vampire.
A wave crashed on the beach.
We rolled around in its foamy grasp.
Kissing in the chaos of a kelpy sea.
Seems I couldn’t save you from me.
Maybe I’m obsessive to think like this.
Probably not impressing you with my cheap tricks.
Honey, it’s depressing what depression does to some.
I’ll play the part for hours
But I know you’ll never come.
